West Nile Virus

The government agency Centers for Disease Control CDC has issued an update on the West Nile Virus on October 9, 2012. West Nile virus is a potentially serious illness. It has been reported that since 1999 (the first known reporting of this mosquito borne illness) over 30,000 people have been reported getting sick. The October 9th 2012 report shows that 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections found in people, mosquitos, and birds. The data shows 4249 cases of disease in people including 168 deaths this year. This is the highest number of cases that have been recorded so far. How is West Nile Virus Spread? Most often the virus is spread from the bite of an infected mosquito.
CDC suggestions for mosquito control:
- Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs
- Support community based mosquito control programs
- Install door and window screens
- Weather permitting wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when you are outdoors.
- Apply repellant to exposed skin.
